As I mentioned yesterday, Mr. O likes to make his own frosting (just like his mom used to make!!). The recipe is so simple I thought I’d share it here!
First, I’ve got to show you something super cute. This is Mr. O’s frosting recipe, written by him when he was young:
The recipe has evolved some, but not much. Here are the ingredients for the current recipe (makes enough for a couple of cupcakes – for more, just multiply the ingredients):
- 1 tbsp butter, melted slightly to have a mix of softened and liquid butter, cooled
- 1/2 – 1 tsp cocoa
- 1/2 - 3/4 cup powdered sugar
- milk, as needed
- (the french roast coffee pictured, while tasty, is not actually an ingredient in this recipe)
Mix the butter and cocoa together until smooth. Add the powdered sugar and 1 tbsp of milk, and stir until combined.
If desired consistency has been reached, stop here. Otherwise, to thin, continue to add milk by the tablespoonful and stir. To thicken, add additional powdered sugar. Adding the milk slowly is important, because it is much easier to add more milk to thin it out than to add more powdered sugar to thicken it up again. Just trust me on that.
You could also leave out the cocoa, add food coloring, or add flavorings or extracts. So easy!
I’m not really a frosting girl, but even I like this one! Give it a try!
